Hi My name is Mark Foster. I am a freelance photographer and model from Macau. My hobbies are film and photography, martial arts and music. My purpose in studying in this course is to expand my technical ability in the Digital Arts and hopefully make it in to the film industry.
Assignment 1
This is the storyboard for my short film. The inspiration for this film is typical aesthetic Instagram daily vlogs. I wanted to capture different aspects of my life including coffee, photography and being a DJ. The video will start slow and slowly speed up then slow down in the end. I depended on the use of natural light for most of my shots and only some shots that done indoors needed some lighting adjustments. The shots used are shown below:
I planned my shots to make a sure I can edit the whole film smoothly. I had a bunch of shots for match cuts and different angles in a single location to make sure the transition between shots were smooth. I had to make sure the shoot was all done in a few hours because I needed the natural light to be about the same in the outdoor shots or shots that would include the sky. I also wanted to create a silhouette shadow contrast shot for the start and ending of my film to keep it interesting and consistent. To keep continuity between shots I made sure I had enough walking shots between locations to ensure it would make sense to the audience. When it came to editing I hoped to limit the use of fading as a transition between scenes to keep the rhythm of the cuts between the scenes, this way Ill also be able to much some cuts to the beat of the BGM I chose. I also made sure I kept the BGM out of some parts of the film to add in some of the street and atmospheric sounds from the footage. The general emotion I hope the audience feels is calm and relaxing but also the sense of being intrigued due to the way the shots are arranged. The editing timeline is shown below:
The key moment in my film isn’t too long, it was the short dj sequence. I wanted to create a sort of contrast in tone compared to the whole film where everything was generally chill to a small energetic party vibe. In the end I still transitioned back to the calm vibe but how I did it was important. When I was thinking about the sound development in this scene I tried to keep the sounds of me closing the blinds, messing with the laptop and my jacket as the only sounds in the scene. Using just those sounds helped me create a greater contrast compared to the moment the DJ sequence happened where the BGM came back in. I made sure the BGM wouldn’t clash with the sounds recorded in the footage and affect the viewing experience. There was a key moment where I timed the silent part of the BGM to me clicking the pause button on my DJ deck, this was a shot I’ve always planned to do in this film. The connection between visuals and sound are important or the viewer would feel weird and disinterested.
